NEBOSH National Diploma

What is the NEBOSH National Diploma?

The NEBOSH National Diploma is a widely recognised qualification suitable for those working as a health andsafety profresional. Successful completion of the Diploma allows application for graduate level membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) which with additional development can lead to chartered membership. Holders of the Diploma may use the designatory letters DipNEBOSH after their name.

NEBOSH is intending to apply for the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (November 2015 specification) to be accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA - www.sqa.org.uk) for delivery across the UK. The February 2010 specification is rated within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF - www.scqf.org.uk) at SCQF Level 10 with 48 SCQF credit points. It is anticipated that the revised November 2015 specification will be at the same level with 51 credits. For users in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, this is comparable to a Vocationally-Related Qualification (VRQ) at Level 6 within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), or Honours Degree standard

The course is divided into 4 Units. The first three units focus on the various aspects of Health and Safety and are split into:

  • Unit A: Managing Health and Safety
  • Unit B: Hazardous Substances/Agents
  • Unit C: Workplace and Work Equipment Safety

A 3-hour examination must be undertaken for each of these three units.

The final Unit requires the preparation and submission of an assignment of bewteen 8000 and 12000 words, which assess the students ability to apply the knowledge developed during the teaching elements by reviewing an organisation's health and safety performance and providing appropriate recommendations for improvement.

NEBOSH have recently completed a review process and have made some changes to the course syllabus. Our next course which is scheduled to begin in October 2018 is already planned and in line with this new specification. More specific details about the course structure can be found on the NEBOSH website.

Why Choose Brunel for your NEBOSH Diploma

Brunel has been a NEBOSH accredited centre ifor approximately 9-years and its staff had been acquainted with the NEBOSH Diploma for several years prior to that, having been heavily involved in the course provided by the University of Bristol. Our Course Manager and Lead Tutor worked within the same role for the University from 2001 and the tutor team, venue and teaching programme remains largely unchanged. Cohorts since 2001 have consistently attained a pass rate far exceeding the National Average with the pass rate almost always being in excess of 75%.

The Course Programme

Brunel’s course is run on a day-release basis, starting on the first Wednesday of October. It then runs every week, with a short break for Christmas and Easter until late May. After a structured revision week, students have approximately 1 month to study for two examinations in early-July. The course then reconvenes in the first week of September, running through until December. The final examination is taken in mid-January with the course assignment due to be submitted in late March. As such the course can be considered to be run over a 16-month period.

The course follows a carefully structured programme, with each of the teaching elements delivered by tutors who are specialist within their field. Tutors will provide students with course notes and in many cases additional reading material relevant to the subject. In addition, students are issued, at the commencement of the course, with a set of the RMS Domain Knowledge Series of books written to follow the NEBOSH National Diploma syllabus closely.

The course manager and lead tutor supports the students throughout the duration of the course including the facilitation of tutorial sessions and the revision week as well as providing a single point of access for help in the event of any queries or concerns.

The course takes place in the pleasant surroundings of the Aztec Hotel within 5-minutes of junction 16 of the M5 (Almondsbury) and so in easy reach of the M4/M5 Interchange at Almondsbury. As well as providing refreshments on arrival and during the mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks, a 2-course meal is provided on each teaching day. This not only avoids the need for students to make their own lunch arrangements, but also allows the students to dine together and discuss others’ experiences.

Although there are very slight changes in the programme year on year due to tutor availability, the basic format remains the same for one cohort to the next.

Our commitment to you, the student

We pride ourselves at Brunel with the exceptionally high pass rate which far exceeds the current National Average. By delivering the course over a period longer than many other centres, we are able to incorporate a minimum of 10-days completely dedicated to revision and, more importantly, developing the essential skill of examination technique. In addition, we provide continued and extensive support to students throughout their course of study to assist them with both the end-of-course assignment and with preparation for the examination. Each week, a Revision Quiz is issued which students are encouraged to complete. All answers that are submitted are reviewed by the course tutor and feedback given as to where improvements could be made.

To reassure students and their employers that we are committed to guiding them successfully through their course of study, should students be unsuccessful at their first attempt we pledge to continue supporting them at no extra charge until they have successfully completed the award (subject to the payment of further NEBOSH examination fees). This includes an invitation to students to attend as many further teaching and revision days as they feel necessary.
